Geophysicist Mark Serreze from the National Snow and Ice Data Center in the US state of Colorado said that the Arctic ice is showing signs of melting even quicker than last year's record pace.
If the ice melts, it would not be until September, when it is at its thinnest after the long, bright summer.
Serreze told the American media that an ice area the size of California has already melted. He estimated that there around a 50 percent chance that all the ice at the North Pole will melt this year.
While Serreze said this has happened before, he added that the phenomenon had likely not occurred 'in modern times'.
