‘There is no consideration being taken for the Fishing Commission’s recommendations, so I’m postponing handling the issue,’ said Ane Hansen to KNR's Radioavisen.
She will, however, propose two amendments to the existing Fisheries Act and she expects that the new act may be completed by 2012. The amendments deal with the catch reporting and landing control.
One of those issues is that in the existing Fisheries Act, there is no legal basis for requiring electronic catch reporting from trading sites and administration of catch reports is therefore not effective.
The second amendment is about controlling the extent of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing in Greenland.
In addition to conforming to obligations under all international conventions, the amendments will also be used to form the basis for work on a new proposal for the Fisheries Act.
Fisheries Commission made its recommendations for the act in February 2009. The Commission proposed that assessments be made of the flex-quota rule, the ITQs, the distinction between coastal and sea-fishing, and how administration of fisheries can be reduced.
Now, eight months after the Commission has submitted its recommendations, the issue has not been politically addressed.
