A Greenlandic member of the Danish parliament is calling on the Self-Rule administration to set aside 200,000 kroner a year to fund purchase of Greenlandic food for Greenlanders staying at Danish hospitals.
Doris Jakobsen made her plea after visiting a hospital and out-patient hotel in Copenhagen, and found that Greenlanders receiving treatment in Denmark receive their native food less than once a week.
"I was impressed by the conditions for patients in all other areas. But their situation could be improved a lot if they could eat food they were used to more often," Jacobsen said.
Greenlandic food is readily available in Copenhagen, and Jacobsen said ensuring patients' quality of life while receiving treatment in Denmark "was only a matter of financial will".
"Setting aside the money would mean a lot more for them than it would mean other places in the budget. We need to find it right now," Jacobsen said.
