The foundation responsible for establishing a national art gallery for Greenland has used money set aside for building the museum to purchase artworks, accountants reviewing the organisation’s spending have concluded.
Project leader Bodil Kaalund admitted to AG newspaper that the purchases had been made, but declined to state what had been purchased or what amount had been spent.
In 2006, parliament set aside 800,000 kroner to be used over the next four years draw up plans for establishing the museum and for the selection process for its architectural design.
But the accountants’ review also concluded that the museum could not account for all of its spending.
When it opens, the National Gallery will showcase Greenlandic art dating from 1900 and modern and contemporary painting, as well as other artworks from the northern polar region.
