There is a position available for a GIS and database expert at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources.
Oil and mineral development are growing activities in Greenland and the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources has recently established an environmental unit that advices the government about how to mitigate the effects of exploration and exploitation activities, protect the environment, and secure the biological diversity. This work is done in collaboration with the Institute for Bioscience, University of Aarhus (DCE). We are looking for a GIS and database expert for this newly formed and still developing environmental unit.
Responsibilities
The main responsibilities of the GIS and database expert will be to establish and maintain a geo-referenced data base containing environmental data related to mineral resources and to coordinate exchange of geo-referenced data with DCE and relevant organizations within the government of Greenland, such as NunaGis and the Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum. In addition, the GIS expert will provide our scientists with advice and support regarding spatial analyses and visualizations of geo-referenced data. This includes data provided by scientists and data obtained from fishermen and hunters.
The work will be done in close collaboration within the institute, with scientists from the Department of Birds and Mammals, the Department of Fish and Crustaceans and the Greenland Climate Research Centre. There will be extensive external collaboration with DCE, and other research partners. Involvement in research projects related to understanding and mitigating the effect of human activities on the environment will be encouraged. MapInfo is the current GIS-tool at the institute, while some of our scientists and collaborators, including DCE use Arc-Gis.
Qualifications
Applicants should hold a university degree in fields such as geography, geology, ecology or remote sensing.
Important qualifications include experience with GIS, large databases, and project management. Knowledge of Greenland, Arctic conditions, and oil and mineral exploration will be an advantage. The working languages are English and Danish, while fluency in Greenlandic will be useful. Personality traits needed for this position include good communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Employment
The position will refer to the head of the Department of Birds and Mammals, who in turn refers directly to the institute´s director.
The salary terms and conditions are specified by the agreement between the Government of Greenland and the Danish Union of Academics. The position will be either permanent or for one year with possibility of extension.
The job is based in Nuuk, Greenland. Starting date is as soon as possible after August 2012.
Unfurnished acommodation can be provided according to the applicable rules. Rent and deposits are paid for according to the rules applicable to the provided accommodation. Rent as well as acommodation standard can vary depending on the condition, age and owner of the provided accommodation. Acommodation provided through employment at the Government of Greenland, must be vacated following termination of the employment. There may be a waiting period before permanent accommodation can be provided, in which temporary accommodation is provided, possibly including shared accommodation, accommodation in hotel appartments, etc.
