There is apparently agreement over the much-discussed halibut fishing issue in northern Greenland.
Hunting and Fishing Minister Ane Hansen, IA, and Qaasuitsup mayor Jess Svane, S, agree that all fishermen should start cleaning up the ocean. That is the prerequisite for the government to consider raising the quota of halibut by 500 tonnes in both Ummannaq and Upernavik.
Long-line fishing in Uummannaq will continue when the additional increase in quota is in place – hopefully by mid-November, according to a joint press release from the minister and mayor.
The agreement was reached during a continuation of the business seminar in Ilulissat, which Qaasuitsup council organized over the past three days. The aim of the seminar was to create a foundation for policy development for Qaasuitsup’s fisheries.
In a press release about the meeting with Ane Hansen, Svane said:
I am glad that by meeting with Ane Hansen we now have created the basis for a good dialogue for closer cooperation. It will help to create a brighter future. It should also be stressed that all participants at the seminar support that fishing must be done on a sustainable basis.
