Dansk Fisk is appealing to the Danish parliament to look into unfair fishing competition from Greenland

Fisheries association Dansk Fisk is criticising the subsidy that Greenlandic fisheries get from the self-rule agreement and wants the Danish parliament to take action, reports Vejle Amts Folkeblad.

Dansk Fisk believes the grant gives Greenlandic companies an unfair competitive advantage –most notably, Royal Greenland having received a half billion kroner in financial aid.

'The Danish fishing industry gets a total subsidy of 4 million kroner, 2 million of which comes from the European Union. So basically we’re talking about the government providing 2 million kroner to its fisheries compared to a half billion to one company in Greenland,’ said Jens Tellefsen, president of Dansk Fisk.

Tellefsen fears that the huge subsidy to Royal Greenland will lead to the company out-competing its Danish competitors and in the end damage Denmark’s fishing industry.
